👩🏻‍💼 Business Thought

Last month we discussed trying new ideas. This month, i’d like to talk about imitation.

As you become more successful, and you build up a style that attracts customers, you may notice others in your field start to imitate your style. Your initial reaction may be anger, but take a deep breathe and let’s look at this from a different angle.

You can’t stop others from imitating your work, and that may make you feel stressed. But it’s better to let these things go. All you can focus on is making sure your work is the best quality, and that you stand out above any who choose to copy you.

Being angry or hurt is incredibly draining to your mental health and your productive energy. Don’t let these things get to you, shrug them off and move forward with being the best you can be. You can’t control the world, but you can control how you choose to react to it.

The opposite scenario can happen too. I have had people reach out to me to reproduce popular potters work because its either “too expensive” or “impossible to snag one.” To this, I always respond with, “I’m sorry, I don’t do reproductions.”

Direct their attention back to the original artist. We all need to respect each others work, and maintain good working morals. If you don’t like the feeling of having your work reproduced, then don’t catch yourself doing that to others.

🧽 Pottery Tools I love!

These tools are a bit pricey, but they are honestly so worth it. Diamond Core has some of my all time favourite tools. These carving tools are what I use when I do my illustrations, as well as when i’m creating carved surfaces in my pottery! They are sharp and produce some of the cleanest lines i’ve seen! They are an essential in my pottery tool kit. You can find all things diamond core here!
