👩🏻‍💼 Business Thought

Last month we discussed celebrating successes, this month I’d like to talk about art shows!

At the beginning of my career, art shows were a great way for me to build a brand and get local interest in my business, whether that was lessons or physical products.

Every show felt a bit like a gamble, especial considering a lot of them have high fees associated with them. Sometimes I would invest a lot of time and money into attending a show only to have very little payoff in the end. Other times I would be blown away by the success!

Every month I would try a new event, from large shows like the artist project or OOAK, too smaller outdoor markets or bazaars. Some of the smaller shows were some of my greatest successes, and didn’t break the bank too much to attend.

Through much trial and error, I managed to figure out where my work did best, and where was best to avoid in the future. It was an expensive lesson, but incredibly useful.

Sometimes when building your business, you have to take risks and try new things to reach a new audience. Shows are a great way to meet the public, make sales, and get valuable feedback about your product.

My biggest recommendation would be to start with the smaller more inexpensive shows, and then work your way up to the larger ones once you have a bit of audience feedback and money to work with.

Today I only participate in two shows a year, Comicon and Fanexpo. Those have become my all time favourite, not just because I find success there, but I also love the community and environment! So get out there and experiment to discover your audience! Just don’t break the bank like I did.. 🥲
